Frigyes Kochmeister, Baron

Baron Frigyes Kochmeister (Sopron, 22 November 1816 - Budapest, 11 September 1907) was the first president of the Pesti Commodity and Stock Exchange, established in 1864.

His life

Youth

Frigyes Kochmeister was born in Sopron in 1816, and after graduating from the local schools, he continued the family tradition of becoming a pharmacist. He worked as an apprentice in the pharmacy of his father, András Kochmeister, and in 1833 he graduated as a pharmacist from the Vienna University of Sciences. His interest in economics and commerce was already evident at this time, as he also studied economics and later gained practical experience in banking and commerce. He broadened his horizons further when he travelled around Europe in 1841, visiting France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, England and other countries.

Professional activity

Business activity

Combining his interest in pharmacy, which he had brought from home, with his commercial experience and contacts throughout Europe, he opened a wholesale medicine and produce shop in Budapest in 1842. This small shop later became a famous wholesaler, which for a long time was a major player in the country's pharmaceutical supply. He then set up a laboratory for the preparation of medicines and organised the colonial trade.

President of the Budapest Commodity and Stock Exchange

Frigyes Kochmeister helped found the Budapest Commodity and Stock Exchange in 1864 and was elected its first president, a position he held for more than 30 years, until 1900. The longest reigning president of the Hungarian Stock Exchange, Frigyes Kochmeister was legendary for his popularity among the brokers of his day. At the opening of the Pesti Commodity and Stock Exchange, he also referred to the international importance of the stock exchanges and in his speech he called on farmers, manufacturers, industrialists and brokers to 'endeavour to ensure a healthy and vigorous life for our institution by regular and diligent attendance at the stock exchange and by doing business, if possible, on the stock exchange'.

Public activities

Frigyes Kochmeister's career has been marked by a very active social involvement, even outside the chairmanship of the stock exchange. In 1859, he was elected president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Pest, and was one of the founders of the Academy of Commerce, the Lloyd Society and the Pest Grain Society. In 1874, he was elected president of the National Protestant Orphanage, after the building of the society was built with 80,000 forints donated by him. Frigijes Kochmeister was also awarded the Austrian and Hungarian Baronial Order. He died in Budapest in 1907.
