Lajos Szende (Stern)
Lajos Szende was born in 1867.
After completing his studies, he joined the Hungarian General Coal Mining Corporation in 1897. He first worked as a secretary to Zsigmond Herz Királdi, the company's general manager, and after his death in 1903 he became temporary general manager, and then general manager from 1905.
Lajos Szende has a lot of merit in promoting the operation of the Hungarian General Coal Mining Joint Stock Company. Under his leadership, the West Hungarian Coal Mining Joint Stock Company and the Salgótarján Coal Mining Joint Stock Company were merged. Under Szende's leadership, the company also made progress for the benefit of the workers: it established an accident insurance fund, expanded the workers' welfare fund, built a 150-bed hospital, and set up a workers' hostel and canteens. In recognition of his work, in 1909, Mine No. VIII was named after him. On 1 August 1910, he merged the Borsodi mines and the Kazinczi Coal Mines Joint Stock Company into a separate joint stock company under the name Borsodi Coal Mines Joint Stock Company. On the one hand, it built a new coal storage depot, and on the other, in order to increase the number of mine workers, it built 18 new six-apartment workers' houses and a pharmacy. The company's schools were also improved. Also in the summer of 1911, the cement factory in Obergalla started operations.
During his activity, the production of the main plant in Tatabánya doubled: in 1913 it reached 20 million m³. His workers' colony of more than 20,000 people became an independent municipality under his leadership. In 1914, a barrel factory was built to transport cement from the mines, and a hydrated lime factory was built. In the same year, a lime kiln was built at Hejőcsaba, next to the lime works at Miskolc-Diósgyőrött.
Lajos Szende died on 7 March 1914. Years before his death, he was already suffering from stomach problems. He underwent surgery for appendicitis at the Herzel Fasor Sanatorium. Although the operation was successful, the progression of his disease meant that his life could not be saved. According to his death certificate, he died of appendicitis and peritoneal cancer at Fasor 2, Városligeti in the VII district.
After his death, the Borsodi Coal Mines Joint Stock Company named a workers' welfare fund after Lajos Szende.
