Lajos Baumgarten
Lajos Baumgarten was born in 1846, a member of the long-established Baumgarten family. His grandfather, Israel Baumgarten, a wool and grain wholesaler, was one of the 100 wealthiest shareholders of the Hungarian Commercial Bank of Pest, founded in 1841, in the financial year 1847/48. And his nephew was Ferenc Ferdinand Baumgarten, who founded the Baumgarten Prize, known from literary history.
He played an active role in the management of steam mills. From 1882 to 1912, he was a member of the board of directors of the Elizabeth Steam Mill Joint Stock Company. From 1895 to 1896, he was a member of the board of directors of the Pannonia Steam Mill Joint Stock Company.
On the other hand, he has taken on leadership roles in a number of other companies. He was a board member of the Postal Savings Bank, the Pesti Home Savings Bank Association, the Home Bank, Ganz-Danubius, the Nasici Tanninnfabrik and several other local railway joint-stock companies. In addition, he was a member of the board of directors of the Pesti Lloyd Association. He was a chairman of the Jewish Community and president of the Weschelmann Institute for the Blind.
He died in Budapest in 1918, aged 72, after a long illness. He was laid to rest in the cemetery on Kerepesi Road.
