{"id":16323,"date":"2026-01-31T11:12:04","date_gmt":"2026-01-31T09:12:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tozsdemuzeum.hu\/?p=16323"},"modified":"2026-01-31T11:17:57","modified_gmt":"2026-01-31T09:17:57","slug":"tozsdeepuletek-tortenetevel-bovult-az-oldal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tozsdemuzeum.hu\/en\/2026\/01\/31\/tozsdeepuletek-tortenetevel-bovult-az-oldal\/","title":{"rendered":"History of stock exchange buildings added to the site"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our regular contributor, R\u00f3bert Szab\u00f3, has developed detailed glossaries describing the history of stock exchange buildings.<\/p>\n<p>The old stock exchange had three buildings throughout its history: unfortunately, two of the three are no longer standing.<\/p>\n<p>The first was the Sz\u00e9chenyi Square, on the site of the present Sofitel (formerly the Atrium Hyatt) hotel. <a href=\"\/en\/tozsdemuzeum.hu\/lloyd-palota\/\">Lloyd-Palota<\/a> which was the trading post between 1864 and 1870. The building was designed by J\u00f3zsef Hild and built in 1830. It was demolished after the Second World War.<\/p>\n<p>The second, a few streets away, on the corner of the quay and Wekerle S\u00e1ndor Street <a href=\"\/en\/tozsdemuzeum.hu\/uj-tozsdeepulet\/\">new Stock Exchange building<\/a> which is now occupied by another hotel, the InterContinental (formerly Forum). The building, completed in 1870, was designed by K\u00e1roly Benk\u00f3 and Ferenc Kolbenheyer and was sold between 1870 and 1905. The building also fell victim to the Second World War.<\/p>\n<p>The third building still standing today is the Liberty Square <a href=\"\/en\/tozsdemuzeum.hu\/tozsdepalota\/\">Exchange Palace<\/a> was. It was built in 1905 according to Ign\u00e1c Alp\u00e1r's design and was used for trading until 1948, when the stock exchange closed. The subsequent history of the building was also colourful: it was initially the headquarters of the Lenin Institute, the House of Technology and later the Hungarian Television, and its interior was almost completely rebuilt, unfortunately without taking into account the preservation of historical monuments. The building was sold to a Canadian investor in 2006 and MTV moved out in 2009, since then it has been vacant and in a very poor state.
